Up until having the same problem as you I have never condoned buying 'non original' products off the internet ( I reckon 90% are knockoff), but as BMW are basically a set of thieves, in this case I would highly recommend having a search around, type in 'sat nav upgrades uk' in to google, top one is for Rusty. These work OK. My original 2008 SATNAV CD was damaged and scratched from what I imagine was a lifetime of sitting in the cd drive and bouncing around in the normal use of the car. It started failing (locking up) when I used it and I had to keep removing the disk to reset the IDrive. I rang BMW for a like for like replacement, I would happily of paid £30-£40 but they wouldn't sell me one, they only sold the latest version.
The latest version would cost me £180, but apparently I would also need my software upgrading which would be another £200. So for BMW to upgrade an original CD supplied by them and only ever used in their equipment as it was designed to be, and damaged due to no fault of my own, they wanted nearly £400. £400 its a JOKE, it doesn't even accept full postcodes!!! Any one who buys an original is mad, BMW why don't you just drop your price and make a few quid and offer good service, rather then forcing potential customers to shop elsewhere.Rant Over.
As many know, there is a torrent file that has an iso of the BMW Navigation 2009.1 North America maps with red light camera info. I downloaded the 4.29 GB ISO from thepiratebay.org. Used my Macbook Pro's Disk Utility to burn the ISO to a Verbatim DVD+R (single layer) disc at 2.4x speed.
I did a burn and a verification. Both processes completed successfully. I go put the new DVD into my car and I get a message on the screen that says: 'New Maps found, please shut down and start in 5 minutes.' I assume this means shut down the car. So I do so and waited for 5 minutes.
Restarted the car and same error. I popped in my 2008.1 dvd that came with my car and the maps load up like normal. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong with my 2009.1 disc? I really don't think I had a burn issue.
Bmw Nav Disc
I shut the car down for about 10-15 minutes and leave the 2009.1 disc in the car. When I go back to start the car, I notice the 2009.1 disc works! I go to i, which are the points of interest, on 'Current Location,' choose 'Car and Travel' submenu, and choose 'Speed and Red Light Cameras', did a search for 100 miles, and the screen shows me a listing of all the cameras. Screen shows the approximate miles away and these weird jumbled letters that don't make any sense. I go back to my map display, and viola!
All the red light cameras are displayed on the map. I turn the car off. Turn the car back on, and the cameras are still displayed on the map. This is great! Furthermore, I noticed that when I started the car again, I was NOT confronted with the Warning Screen wherein you have to click ACCEPT. The screen immediately showed the previous screen I was looking at before I shut the car off (which was the first menu within the navigation menu).
Update: Okay, I had the car off for about 30 min. When I started it again, I was greeted with the Warning Screen and I had to click Accept. At least the red light camera information was still displayed on the map. Not many people are seeding this file right now. 17 was the most I ever saw. It took about 2 days for me to download. I did achieve speeds of around 150-300 kbs which was awesome.
Then sometimes it would drop to about 10 kbs. When that happened, I closed my uTorrent application and reopened it and got fast speeds again. I believe that whoever created this, did some modifying. I think some of the more minor points of interest (like funeral homes) were deleted to fit the new Red Light Camera data on there and keep the disc under 4.7 GB for single layer burning.
